Let’s Meet Up! CC Southeast Pastor’s Conference

January 9, 2010

Dear Calvary Geeks…

It’s been about 9 months since I started CalvaryGeeks.com. Thank you for registering and connecting with other members of the community.

Like many of you, I often get ideas in my head and it’s hard to tell when something is being led by the Holy Spirit or is just a fleeting fancy. I believe that my heart behind starting Calvary Geeks was definitely a God thing. We need to stay connected and accountable and also help each other.

God leads us but we also need to do our part. Frankly, I have not made CGk a priority this year due to working work and living life. But I do want to keep it going and see what the Lord might do with this venture.

I believe that the next step is to use the momentum we already have and make the effort to meet each other in person. An excellent opportunity might be for some of us to try to meet up at Pastor’s Conferences or other Calvary Conferences.

I’ll be at the Southeast CC Pastor’s Conference in Merritt Island, Jan 18-20 and we’ll have a meetup for those who are attending the conference.

I created a Facebook event on our CGk page if you want to RSVP for that.

Follow us on Twitter also and we’ll send out FB and Twitter updates at the Conference to set the date/time.

I’d like to hear from you to know what your thoughts are regarding Calvary Geeks. Your help and ideas are welcome.

I Have a Dream: CGkCamp

April 20, 2009

So, it’s only been a few weeks since the launch of CalvaryGeeks.com and I’m already dreaming of things we could do.

The whole point of CGk is to get connected. If you are like me, you are a geek (duh) and you are also a believer in Jesus. Do you share the same struggle that I do in that you feel alone and disconnected from fellowship with other believers when you are interacting in the “geek” world? Part of that is due to the anti-God worldview of the tech culture and part of it is due to the fact that many of your local Christian brethren are just not geeks like you.

I started CGk partly for myself. I need fellowship and accountability in my work as a freelance web developer. I also want to effectively engage the culture and conduct good business without compromising my faith. Hopefully you can relate.

Back to the dream. Anyone ever heard of BarCamp? Well there have been tons of BarCamp-style spin-offs over the years, e.g., WordCamp for WordPress geeks, and I am even running something called LaidOffCamp/FreelanceCamp in Miami in June.

How about CGkCamp? And I’m not really talking about a full-blown conference like we usually do at Calvary Chapel (i.e., pastors, mens, womens conferences) but a more casual conference where we get together and share our geek ideas, problems and solutions as well as get some Biblical counsel specific for Calvary Geeks. Of course, I’m not opposed to doing a formal conference. I just don’t want budget and administration to be a hindrance to getting down to the basics of connecting and sharing.

I’m thinking that we would start with regional events that might be as small as meetups for a couple of hours or so just to connect. Then that might grow into larger events.

Thoughts? Please comment below.

Staying Connected

April 10, 2009

As “geeks” we can tend to shut ourselves up in our own virtual online world. I started CalvaryGeeks.com as a way for those of us who are followers of Jesus the Messiah to stay connected to each other for accountability, commaraderie and help.

We can all benefit from learning new tips in our craft. But more importantly we need each other to stay true.

What are you waiting for? Join up and stay connected!
